Expression of interest in business contract

It is quite common for contractors to seek expressions of interest from their potential suppliers. One reason for doing so is that they may find that the local market can't fill their contracts.

This is really a form of testing the waters. In some cases the contractor will go offshore to find a supplier, if the expressions of interest are insufficient.

The contractor also expects to get information which will give them some leads about who to approach. They may not go to public tender for the contract, but simply approach the companies directly on receipt of their expressions of interest.

The contractor is not bound by any expression of interest received.

There are no legal obligations created on any contractor by an expression of interest.

Those are two of the main reasons why expressions of interest are sought. The contractor is in effect receiving a lot of comparative information with no obligations upon themselves.

Please note:

Expressions of interest should be of the highest possible standard.

This is a competitive process, and you should consider your expression of interest to be as important as an actual tender for contract.

You must provide top quality information to support your letter.

The example below is a simple expression of interest in a drainage project for a large housing development. The drainage works are required to be completed before construction can begin, so the time frame for the works is important.

The letter supplies evidence of capacity to do the work, by citing their previous work of this kind, and providing details of their abilities regarding the current project as specified by the contractor.
