An oath was originally a statement made to swear honesty in ancient times. An oath was therefore a real social obligation, and to break an undertaking made under oath was unacceptable. In modern times, oaths are administered under statutes, and carry legal obligations regarding their veracity. A false statement under oath is an offence, in some cases punishable by jail terms. Oaths are usually administered under specific statutory legislation. |
Examples of Oath:
Remember you're under oath to tell the truth. I took an oath to uphold the law. Political interviews are not given under oath. If you break an oath, you reduce your credibility. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oath https://www.indiana.edu/~ancmed/oath.htm |
