A hypothesis is a 'supposition' in the literal Greek translation. Scientific hypotheses are generally synthesized from observations to attempt to find a rule for the observations. The actual use of a hypothesis is to find a working theorem, formula or principle to verify the observations and provide a basis for prediction. In common usage, the word hypothesis is generally used as a synonym for 'theory', rather than in the extended scientific context.
Examples of Hypothesis:
|So according to your hypothesis, we should be in France, not India, by now?|
Hypothetically, on our present budget, we will be able to buy that hamburger next year.
