Small talk is minor conversation, not relating to any important issues or situations. The common usage of the term is either insulting, derogatory or dismissive, referring to subject matter as unimportant and/or in some cases uninteresting. The usual social idiom of referring to conversation as small talk includes an inference of gossip, trivia, and devalues the status of the speakers by implication. A person accused of small talk is in effect being called unimportant or irrelevant, and often infers wasting the listener's time.
