An internship is an important part of many people's professional lives. The cover letter is an integral part of any job application, and it's also part of the internship application.
Your letter has to strike key elements of the internship's requirements to be effective. The idea is to prove you're up to the job, which means paying close attention to the role of the intern and skills involved. Depending on the nature of the internship, you'll have to emphasize key elements in your cover letter.
As well as skills, qualification, and study achievements, you also have to prove motivation. A bland, average cover letter will probably get an average result: Someone else gets the internship.
You simply need to show a range of good values in your application. Internships can be highly competitive, and quality counts. Good expression and good information are essential.
The cover letter doesn't have to be lengthy. A page is the usual size. Only do more if it's absolutely unavoidable, and not much more.
Presentation matters, so check quality.
Spelling, grammar, and all names and references must be correct.
In this example the applicant wants a rare opportunity, an intern journalist job with a with a news agency, something like Reuters. Note that the information is set out in small paragraphs, and refers to the quality aspects of the internship as motivation.
Example:The Human Resources Manager
Dear Sir or Madam:
Intern Journalist, Global News Inc (Ref: 010/Intern 0001/2)
Enclosed please find my application for the above position.
I'm currently in my final year of my Bachelor of Journalism at Anywhere College. I'm now looking for a top quality internship as the proper level of training and experience for my future career.
I have some prior practical experience as a freelance reporter for the local paper and some basic sub editing. The local paper was kind enough to provide the attached reference.
I have achieved good/excellent passes in all subjects of my degree. However, the obvious need at this stage of study and qualification is for in depth real world training, and professional expertise to oversee that training.
This extraordinary opportunity to work with a major news agency is therefore a big factor in my application for this internship.
Please advise if you require any additional information regarding my application.
