The school of belief that nothing has any meaning or purpose. Sometimes ridiculed/despised as a cowardly escape by self proclaimed intellectuals from the concept of existence, nihilism bases itself on the principle that meaning and purpose can't be conclusively proved. Alternative forms of nihilism include destruction of society 'for its own sake' and that existence itself is unreal. 'Nihil' is the Latin for 'nothing' and the derivation of the English word 'nil' The name means literally 'nothing-ism'. |
Examples of Nihilism:
Kierkegaard- nihilism as a condition of suppression of individuality. Nietzsche- The vacuum created by failure of society and life to meet expectations.
