An oasis is literally an area of water or cultivation in an otherwise barren area. The word is also used as a descriptor of a good place within an unpleasant environment. The main usage in English is as a metaphor. The oasis typically operates as a positive term related to context, although sarcasm is also possible. The oasis is also the archetypal image of classical Arabia.
