Request for information about pet selection from animal shelter

Dear People

My family has been making near daily requests for us to bring home a new member of the family ever since our beloved Beagle passed last year at the age of 15. I made a deal with them that we could get a new dog if we gathered enough information to make an educated decision and my children insisted we adopt a pet from the animal shelter.

With this in mind, I am looking for information as to what the best dog breed would be for a family of five with ages ranging from 12 to 56. We have a smaller yard, and no allergies. We would like a dog which is comfortable around many people and can handle excitement and lots of movement around them. Could you please send us information on what you may have available as well as the best time to come in to get acquainted with a possible new family member.
