| A use of words which have similar sounds like 'cat' and 'mat' in a text, lyric or statement. Rhyme was traditionally used as a memory aid, a rhythmic method, using metered lines of consistent length for emphasis, and for the novelty element. Sometimes only part of the rhyming words is similar, like 'absolute' and 'resolute'. In some cases, like doggerel, rhyme may occur throughout a text, as a play on words. |
