A hierarchy is a conceptual structure, representing a series of levels in a society, organization, or series of processes. The common usage term refers to the entire structural concept in context with statements. In a scientific usage, the word hierarchy may relate to an ecosystem, set or other function in that discipline.

Examples of Hierarchy:

Organizational hierarchies are based on the structure of employees and levels of management and specialization.
The food chain is a hierarchy of organisms, described by diet.
A military chain of command is a hierarchy based on rank.
