A synonym is a word having a similar or identical meaning to another. Synonyms are used in literature to reduce repetition, and in some cases to extend meanings. A synonym can also be created in the use of context, often for sarcastic reasons,to use meanings of words in contrasting contexts. Where a selective use of words is involved, synonyms can be highly effective.
