Query letters (aka 'letters of inquiry') are business letters making formal inquiries regarding business issues requiring a reply in the same form which is used for business or legal purposes. Query letters may be seeking new business or in many cases they include references to specific issues affecting the person making the inquiry regarding existing business. Some query letters are based largely on matters which directly impact the letter writer, seeking clarification of business or personal matters. A sub-species form of usage of the term query letter relates to letters to publishers regarding their requirements for publication or book or content proposals.
