Acronym for GNU Multi-Precision Library, part of the GNU Project. This is an internet library for arbitrary precision arithmetic on an open source license basis. GMP emphasizes high speed calculations on all scales. The library is mainly targeted for Unix-type systems. Primary applications are cryptography applications, internet security applications and research and computer algebra systems. GMP is incorporated in the well known Mathematica and Maple algebra systems. The GMP library operates in 5 different languages, C, C++, .NET, PHP Perl and Python. This is a particularly long running system, started in 1991, with its 5.0.1build coming onstream in February 2010.
